City trip Palermo

72 hours in a city of temptation

4 Days - 3 Nights

Palermo is not a city to be viewed fleetingly. It is alive, layer upon layer. In one afternoon you go from golden mosaics to markets that smell of sea and citrus, from puppets of history to contemporary street art. That layering makes Palermo irresistible: culture and character, but also light, air and delicious food. Writer Roberto Alajmo did not write, "Palermo è una cipolla" for nothing.

Those who take their time will discover something new each time, from markets steaming with spices and sea to chapels where mosaics glow. We would like to take you along our favorite places: from the colorful market to surprising street art, from quiet courtyards and green oases to refined street food that you will enjoy eating with your hands.

DAY 1: Sea, Kalsa and a soft landing

You drop your luggage, take a breath and step right out onto the street. Start quietly and walk to the waterfront. The wide coastal park and the arc of the harbor immediately give you air; from La Cala you can see the city's domes and roofs looming like a backdrop. The large portrait by Falcone and Borsellino at the harbor is one of those works that gets you quiet for a moment: a powerful piece of street art in the right place. Then you wander into Kalsa, past Piazza Magione and the small streets around it. The neighborhood has blossomed into a creative heart in recent years, with murals by Hopnn, Exit/Enter, Astro Naut and others. End your first afternoon with a simple aperitivo near Piazza Marina and watch the city switch to evening. As the sun slowly sets, walk through Quattro Canti to Piazza Pretoria. In the late afternoon sun, the fountain takes on just that sheen that makes the day perfect. Take your time, Palermo is worth it.

Tonight, taste Palermo on the streets. Think panelle and crocchè at the counter and a cannolo that doesn't get filled until the last minute. It's the fastest way to feel like a local in the city. Your vacation has begun.

DAY 2:Gold in the morning, green in the afternoon, pops in the evening

The morning is for wow moments. Head to Palazzo dei Normanni with the Cappella Palatina and admire the play of gold and deep blue and combine with the Cattedrale. Palermo's Arab-Norman heritage is the reason the city is on the World Heritage List.

After the cultural dive, it is blissful to land in the Giardini del Palazzo Orléans. This park is right by the historic heart and is loved by locals. You sit among ficus with aerial roots, palms and pools of fountain light. Just right for a picnic or a quiet coffee break before heading back into the city.

Feel like taking home something that's not in the first best tourist shop? Stop by Le Stanze del Gattopardo for ceramics with character or opt for Stanze al Genio: a museum house with a staggering majolica collection. This is Palermo at its most intimate. This evening is for theater with a city heart: Opera dei Pupi. For generations, Palermitans have let their wooden heroes fight, love and triumph. A performance by the Cuticchio family or by Enzo Mancuso is a delightful piece of local culture, funny and artless

DAY 3: On the pedals, an exotic palace and cruising along the coast

This morning you'll see Palermo in motion. Opt for a guided bike tour: you'll roll past the Foro Italico, soak up the sea air and finish with a street food tasting. It gives you a compact, lively overview of the city.

In the afternoon, step outside the line of standard sights and visit the Palazzina Cinese on the edge of the Parco della Favorita. Rooms full of colors and patterns, a quirky fantasy of a court palace, with Monte Pellegrino in the background.

Around sunset, it's time to admire the city from the water: a boat ride from La Cala toward Mondello. It's a different Palermo, with bays, mountains and the city's skyline. Enjoying it is all you can do now, and then back into the harbor just as the domes begin to glow again.

Finish the last evening in downtown. If you still have energy, wander past the open-air crates of the largest outdoor bookstore at Piazza Monte Santa Rosalia. A few Dutch-language finds among the Italian paper will give you a quirky souvenir. Your last dinner you consume with party bubbles in your stomach and regret in your heart because it's almost over.

DAY 4: Last coffee, last look

It really is time to leave, one more espresso at the bar and a stroll down your favorite street. Palermo tends to linger, like the salt on your skin after the sea.

Convenient

  • Explore the historic center on foot; for sea and hills, choose bike or boat.
  • Order at the bar for the local rhythm and the right price.
  • Always have your cannolo filled on the spot; crispy remains sacred.
  • In Palermo, you say arancina, not arancino.
