Profile
For travellers who want to discover a city through food, culture and local atmosphere. Ideal for a short trip full of history, markets and Sicilian cuisine.
Day 1: Sea, Kalsa and a soft landing
Upon arrival, head straight for the historic centre. Walk towards the harbour at La Cala and then discover the Kalsa district, one of the oldest parts of Palermo.
You will walk past Piazza Magione and Piazza Marina, two squares where locals gather. Through small streets, you will eventually reach Quattro Canti and the Fontana Pretoria, which are beautifully lit up in the late afternoon sun. In the evening, taste Palermo on the street: panelle, crocchè and a fresh cannolo at a small bar.
Day 2: Gold in the morning, green in the afternoon, puppets in the evening
Today you will visit the city's most famous historical sites. Start at Palazzo dei Normanni and admire the mosaics of the Cappella Palatina. Then walk to Palermo Cathedral.
In the afternoon, you can escape the hustle and bustle in the Giardini del Palazzo Orléans, a park near the historic centre. In the evening, discover a piece of Sicilian tradition with a performance by the Opera dei Pupi.
Day 3: On your bike, an exotic palace and sailing along the coast
In the morning, explore Palermo by bicycle along the Foro Italico, with views of the sea. In the afternoon, visit the Palazzina Cinese in the Parco della Favorita, a striking palace with exotic influences. End the day with a boat trip along the coast towards Mondello. From the water, you can see Palermo and the surrounding mountains in the evening light.
Day 4: Last coffee, last look
It's really time to leave, one last espresso at the bar and a stroll through your favourite street. Palermo has a tendency to linger, just like the salt on your skin after the sea.
Caractère tips
- The historic centre of Palermo is best explored on foot. For a trip along the coast or towards the hills, choose a bicycle or a boat from La Cala.
- In many bars, you first order at the till and then take your coffee or snack to the bar. That way, you pay the local price.
- Order a cannolo that is filled at the last minute. This keeps the pastry crispy.
- In Palermo, you say arancina, not arancino. That one letter immediately reveals whether you know the city a little.
