After touring Cambodia, Vietnam or Thailand, you can go on an adventure in northern Laos. This short expedition gives you the chance to discover the hidden history and remote areas of Laos. Follow the famous Indochina War Trail and the Ho Chi Minh Trails, take a Boat Ride on the Nam Thuen River for the Ho Chi Minh Trails and be amazed by the longest river cave in Laos, Kong Lor.
Important information:
- An international passport is required, valid for at least 6 months after the return trip, with at least 2 blank pages.
- A visa is not required for stays of up to 15 days.
- No special vaccinations are required, but are recommended. When traveling to Laos we recommend vaccination against Hepatitis A, DTP and BMR. Vaccination for yellow fever is only required if you have been in a country where yellow fever may occur within the past 7 days. Malaria risk is high outside the cities in the southern part of the country. We recommend using mosquito repellent outside major cities from dusk to dawn. We do advise seeking advice from your family doctor or the Tropical Institute.
Day 1: Arrival in Luang Prabang
Upon arrival at Luang Prabang airport, you will be welcomed by your driver for a private transfer to your hotel in the center of atmospheric Luang Prabang.
Day 2: Luang Prabang - Xieng Khouang
In the morning, your guide will pick you up at your hotel in Luang Prabang for the journey to Xieng Khouang, the province of the mysterious Plain of Jars. During the seven-hour trip, you will drive through scenic mountain ranges and past H'mong villages, with plenty of stops along the way to admire the scenery. In Phonsavan, you'll visit the more than 2,000-year-old jars, whose origins still remain a mystery. Archaeologists suspect they were funerary urns, but recent excavations have revealed surprising treasures. In the late afternoon you'll arrive at your lodge, where you'll watch the sun disappear behind the hills.
Day 3: Xieng Khuang
After breakfast, you depart for an exploration of the mysterious Plain of Jars. You will visit about three sites, the first of which is the largest and best preserved site. Between sites two and three, you will take a six-kilometer hike through the hilly landscape, of which site three is located on a beautiful hill among rice fields damaged by war. After the hike, enjoy lunch at a local restaurant and visit Muang Khun, the ruined ancient town of Xieng Khouang, where you explore ruins and a Tai Dam village. Back in Xieng Khuang, you can visit the MAG visitor center on war history. You will stay at a hotel in Phonesavan
Day 4: Xieng Khuang - Ban Nahin
Today you will depart for an eight-hour drive to the Nam Teun Bridge, in the limestone region of Khammoune. This route takes you through some of the most impressive karst landscapes in Laos. In some places you will drive on top of limestone formations and have dramatic views of fields full of sharp limestone mountains. Along the way, you'll stop at several panoramic points for views of the limestone landscape. At Nam Teun Bridge, you'll see how locals reuse fuel tanks from old B-52 bombs from the Vietnam War to make "bomb boats." If weather and time permit, you can take a short trip on one of these boats. You will then travel on to the village of Teun Hin Boon, on the edge of the National Biodiversity Conservation Area, where you will spend the night in a hotel. Here you will get a glimpse of Lao village life and have the opportunity to meet the local children. The rest of the day you will have time to explore the village, hike or just relax. In the evening you will enjoy dinner at a local restaurant.
Day 5: Ban Nahin - Kong Lor
In the morning, you will depart with your guide on a local boat to cross the impressive Kong Lor cave. Then you will hike to Ban Na Tan, where you will enjoy a picnic lunch in the village. The rest of the day you will have free time in and around your hotel in Ban Nahim.
Day 6: Ban Nahin - Vientiane
After breakfast, say goodbye to the village community, which, according to tradition, often holds a "Basi" ceremony to bless travelers. Then begin a drive of about seven hours through the karst landscape of the Laos National Protection Area, where you can sometimes spot wildlife such as monkeys, civet cats and even the woolly panther. Along the way, you will make several stops to admire the views of the limestone formations and have lunch at a local restaurant. In the evening you will arrive at your hotel in Vientiane, where you will enjoy a delicious dinner.
Day 7: Return home
Your trip is over. You take the plane back home.
