Route
You travel from Svolvær to the southern part of the Lofoten Islands, passing places such as Henningsvær, Reine and Å along the way. The route follows beaches, fjords, small harbours and mountain roads close to the sea.
Pace
Your days combine hikes, wildlife experiences, boat excursions and time in small fishing villages. Along the way, there is plenty of time for stops at beaches, viewpoints or a lunch by the water.
Highlights
You hike to the summit of Fløya, spot sea eagles during a safari and drive past Haukland Beach and Uttakleiv. You also kayak beneath the midnight sun, discover Å and head towards the Trollfjord by RIB boat. From late May to mid-July, the sun barely sets here, which means daylight continues well into the evening.
Accommodation
You stay in Svolvær and Reine, two excellent bases for exploring different parts of the Lofoten Islands. Both villages are located close to the harbour and near hiking trails and excursions.
Profile
For travellers who enjoy spending time outdoors and discovering Northern Norway through hikes, boat excursions and small fishing villages. This journey suits those who like deciding for themselves how active each day will be.
Day 1: Arrival in Svolvær
You start your journey in Svolvær, the largest town in the Lofoten Islands. After arriving, you walk towards the harbour, where wooden racks filled with stockfish reflect the fishing industry that has shaped these islands for centuries. Along the waterfront, small fishing boats lie next to modern expedition vessels while restaurants focus their menus on cod, king crab and seafood caught in the surrounding waters. Find a table by the water and enjoy your first evening in the north while daylight lingers late into the night.
Day 2: Wildlife and the summit of Fløya
Today, you decide how active you want the day to be. One of the best-known hikes starts just outside Svolvær and takes you to the summit of Fløya. Along the way, you climb stone steps and rocky sections with increasingly wide views over the harbour, the surrounding peaks and the fjords. Later in the day, you head into nature with a guide for a wildlife safari. With some luck, you may spot sea eagles flying low above the water or moose appearing at the edge of the forests. You spend another night in Svolvær.
Day 3: Along beaches and fishing villages
You leave Svolvær behind and travel south along one of Norway’s most famous routes. Together with a private guide, you stop at small bays, remote beaches and viewpoints that many travellers simply pass by. At Haukland Beach, white sand lies surrounded by dark mountain peaks, while Uttakleiv is known for its rounded rock formations and open sea views. Along the way, you pass fishing villages with red wooden rorbuer built on stilts above the water. By evening, you reach Reine, set between fjords and steep mountain walls.
Day 4: Å and kayaking beneath the midnight sun
Today, you continue to Å, the southernmost village in the Lofoten Islands. In the small centre, you walk past old fishermen’s cabins, drying racks and wooden buildings that show how closely life here remains connected to the ocean. At the Norwegian Fishing Village Museum, you learn more about cod fishing and the winters during which fishermen spent months at sea. Later in the evening, you step into a kayak and paddle along the coastline while the sun hovers just above the horizon. The water reflects the mountains and out at sea you often hear nothing but the sound of your paddle. You stay overnight in Reine.
Day 5: Mountains, fjords and boat excursions
Today, nothing is fixed. From Reine, several hiking trails lead towards mountain lakes, ridges and viewpoints overlooking the fjords. Those who prefer the water can join a boat excursion through narrow fjords lined with steep cliffs. Along the way, you pass small settlements that can only be reached by boat. Prefer staying closer to the village? Along the coastline, there are plenty of places to sit back and look out over the sea and surrounding mountains.
Day 6: Art and small islands in Henningsvær
On your way back north, you take time for several stops along the route. In Henningsvær, the houses are spread across small islands connected by bridges. Between the traditional fishing buildings, you find galleries, studios and cafés that attract artists and photographers. Walk along the harbour while fishing boats dock and seabirds circle above the piers. At the end of the day, you return to Svolvær for your final nights on the islands.
Day 7: Experiencing the Trollfjord up close
Your final full day once again focuses on nature. From Svolvær, you depart by RIB boat towards the Trollfjord, a narrow fjord framed by steep cliffs. In some sections, there is barely enough space for larger vessels to turn around. Along the way, you pass towering rock faces where sea eagles regularly nest and learn more about the fishing traditions and landscapes of this region. Prefer staying on land? Visit a museum in Svolvær or head back to the coast one last time for a final walk.
Day 8: Departure from the north
After breakfast, your journey through the Lofoten Islands comes to an end. Before leaving, you may take one final look at the mountains surrounding Svolvær and the boats moored in the harbour. Afterwards, you travel towards the airport for your flight home.
