8 Days - 7 Nights

Route

You travel from lively Svolvær all the way to Å, the southernmost village of the Lofoten Islands. Along the way, you drive on spectacular coastal mountain roads and stop in places such as Henningsvær and Reine. White sandy beaches, fjords and charming fishing harbours appear one after another along the route.

Pace

Your days are filled with scenic hikes, boat trips and time exploring small fishing villages. There is always enough time to stop at a viewpoint or enjoy a long lunch by the harbour.

Highlights

During the trip, you hike to the top of Fløya for breathtaking views and head into nature on a sea eagle safari. You visit the iconic beaches of Haukland and Uttakleiv and paddle a kayak while the sun barely sets at night. You also discover the historic village of Å and venture deep into the dramatic Trollfjord by RIB boat. Travelling between late May and mid-July? That means experiencing the midnight sun and enjoying extra-long days to discover the islands entirely at your own pace.

Accommodation

You stay in Svolvær and Reine, two excellent bases for exploring different parts of the Lofoten Islands. Both villages are located close to the harbour and near hiking trails and excursions.

Profile

This trip is ideal for travellers who enjoy the outdoors and want the freedom to decide how active each day will be. Challenging hikes and slow walks through fishing villages fit equally well into this journey through the Lofoten Islands.

Day 1: Landing in Svolvær

You will begin your journey in Svolvær, the largest town on the islands. Upon arrival, take a stroll straight to the harbor, where the wooden racks filled with stockfish showcase just how vital fishing still is to this day. In the harbor, traditional fishing boats lie side by side with modern vessels, and the local restaurants serve fish caught that very same day. Find a spot along the quayside and enjoy your first evening, which stays bright for hours on end thanks to the northern sun.

Day 2: Hiking to Fløya and a Wildlife Safari

Today, you choose just how active you want to be. One of the area's most famous hikes departs close to Svolvær, leading you to the summit of Mount Fløya. Along the way, you will climb via stone steps and rocky paths, with the views over the harbor, the surrounding peaks, and the fjords widening with every step. Later in the day, you will venture out into nature with a guide for a wildlife safari. With a bit of luck, you might spot white-tailed eagles soaring low over the water or moose appearing at the edge of the woods. You will spend another night in Svolvær.

Day 3: Iconic Beaches and the Road to Reine

You will leave Svolvær behind and follow one of Norway’s most scenic routes to the south. Together with a private guide, you will stop at hidden bays and beaches that you wouldn't easily find on your own. You will visit the white sands of Haukland Beach and the striking rock formations of Uttakleiv. Along the way, you will drive past photogenic fishing villages featuring the famous red stilt houses (rorbuer). At the end of the day, you will arrive in Reine, a village beautifully nestled between the fjords and the mountains.

Day 4: Historic Å and Kayaking Under the Midnight Sun

Today, you will head to Å, the southernmost village of the Lofoten Islands. In the center, you can wander between historic fishermen's cabins and wooden buildings that offer a glimpse into what life here used to be like. At the stockfish museum, you will learn all about cod fishing and the harsh winters at sea. Later in the evening, you will step into a kayak to paddle along the coast while the sun hovers just above the horizon. It is wonderfully serene, allowing you to enjoy the surrounding mountains right from the water. You will sleep in Reine again.

Day 5: A Free Day Between the Fjords

Today, nothing is set in stone. From Reine, you can embark on various hikes to mountain lakes or viewpoints overlooking the fjords. Would you rather get out on the water? Opt for a boat cruise past sheer cliff faces and remote hamlets that can only be reached by boat. If you prefer a more relaxing day, you can simply enjoy the views of the sea and the mountains in and around the village.

Day 6: The Artists' Village of Henningsvær

On your way back up north, take plenty of time for several stops. You will visit Henningsvær, a village spread across small islands connected by bridges. Among the old fishing buildings, you will now find delightful galleries, workshops, and cafés. Stroll leisurely through the harbor as the boats return and seabirds glide over the water. At the end of the day, you will drive back to Svolvær for your final nights.

Day 7: By RIB Boat to the Narrow Trollfjord

Your last full day is dedicated once again to the wilderness. From Svolvær, you will speed off in a fast RIB boat toward the Trollfjord, a remarkably narrow fjord bordered by awe-inspiring, steep rock walls. Along the way, you will cruise past steep cliffs where white-tailed eagles often nest, while learning more about the history of fishing in this region. Prefer to stay on dry land? You can visit a museum in Svolvær or enjoy one last beautiful coastal walk.

Day 8: Departure from the North

After breakfast, your journey through the Lofoten Islands comes to an end. Take a final moment to soak in the views of the mountains and the Svolvær harbor before heading to the airport for your flight back home.

What to Expect Regarding Budget?

For this trip, you can expect a starting price of €7,000 for two people (or €3,500 per person). This includes flights, bed & breakfast accommodation, a rental car, and the mentioned activities. The exact price depends on your travel dates, your final choices, and any optional extras.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Lofoten Road Trip

Do I need a rental car for this trip and what are the roads like on the Lofoten Islands?

Yes, a rental car is essential to experience this journey in complete freedom. You will mostly follow the E10, the iconic main road that connects the islands via impressive bridges and tunnels. The roads are well-maintained and paved, but they can be narrow and winding. Because the landscape is so overwhelming, we recommend driving leisurely and taking plenty of time for your journeys—you will want to pull over for a photo at every turn!

Is it safe to drive yourself on the Lofoten Islands in winter?

Absolutely, as long as you adjust your driving style. In the winter months, your rental car comes standard equipped with high-quality winter tires (often studded), ensuring excellent grip on snow and ice. Furthermore, the main roads are kept well-cleared of snow. Because the weather can change rapidly and winter days are shorter, we deliberately keep the drives between Svolvær and Reine compact, ensuring you always travel comfortably with plenty of time to spare.

How physically challenging are the hikes and activities on this trip?

The Lofoten Islands are renowned for their steep, rugged mountains. In winter, trails such as the one to Mount Fløya can be covered in snow or ice. Depending on the conditions, we adjust the route or head out with snowshoes or crampons/spikes under your shoes. The wonderful thing about this trip is that you can always determine the pace in consultation with your guide or entirely at your own rhythm. The water activities, like the RIB boat and kayaking, take place in stable vessels under the guidance of experts, and you will be provided with a special thermal suit to keep you perfectly warm.
