Step aboard for a captivating 11-day expedition through the heart of Baja California, one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. This cruise leads you past silent desert landscapes, islands that feel frozen in time and turquoise waters where dolphins, sea lions and whales accompany you along the way.
You’ll explore iconic sites such as Magdalena Bay, Cabo Pulmo and Loreto Bay National Park, all protected by UNESCO for their remarkable wildlife. During zodiac excursions, snorkelling adventures and land explorations, you’ll find yourself face to face with sea-lion colonies, brightly coloured fish and, with a bit of luck, the majestic blue whale.
Important information:
- A valid international passport is required for the duration of your stay, with at least two blank pages.
- No visa is required.
- Vaccinations for polio, tetanus and hepatitis A are recommended. A yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if you have recently travelled to a region where yellow fever occurs. We recommend seeking advice from your GP or a Tropical Institute.
Day 1: Cabo San Lucas
You embark in Cabo San Lucas between 4 pm and 5 pm, right at the southern tip of Baja California. While the ship prepares for departure, you already spot the iconic rock arches of “El Arco” and the white beaches along the coast. The atmosphere is lively: yachts in the marina, music along the boardwalk and soft evening light over the ocean. This is the gateway to the Sea of Cortez, where desert and ocean meet without losing their wild edge.
Day 2: At sea, heading north
Your first full day at sea sets the pace for the journey. Relax on deck, attend a lecture about the Sea of Cortez ecosystem or enjoy a quiet moment in the spa. Outside, the horizon stretches endlessly, sometimes broken by dolphins or seabirds following the ship. It’s a peaceful transition towards the more remote regions ahead.
Day 3: Guerrero Negro
Between salt flats and sand dunes lies Guerrero Negro, known as a nursery for grey whales. In season, mothers and calves rest in the sheltered lagoons, safely away from the ocean swell. During boat excursions, you watch these gentle giants breathe calmly and sometimes approach out of curiosity. The mix of stark desert, industrial salt extraction and astonishing marine life gives this area a unique, almost surreal character.
Day 4: At sea along the Pacific coast
Another day to unwind and enjoy both the ship and the open ocean. The deck is an ideal spot to watch seabirds or simply follow the steady rhythm of the waves.
Day 5: Magdalena Bay
Magdalena Bay is known for its calm waters, long sand dunes and the seasonal presence of grey whales. Dolphins and many bird species also thrive in this protected area. By Zodiac, you explore sandbanks and small islands where pelicans and cormorants gather. The vast landscape (big sky, sweeping dunes, tranquil water) creates a rare feeling of space and serenity.
Day 6: Cabo Pulmo National Park
On the eastern coast of the peninsula lies Cabo Pulmo, one of North America’s oldest coral reefs. Beneath the clear blue surface unfolds a vibrant world: shimmering fish, colourful reef species and graceful rays. Snorkelling or diving reveals just how rich this ecosystem is. The nearby village tells another story, a community that chose conservation and ecotourism, bringing new life to a once-fragile marine habitat.
Day 7: Loreto Bay National Park
Loreto Bay National Park is a tapestry of volcanic islands, rock formations and deep cobalt-blue waters. The steep cliffs show the volcanic origins of the landscape. From the Zodiacs you search for dolphins, sea lions and, in season, whales moving slowly through the bay. The play of rugged rocks and bright light makes this a paradise for nature lovers and photographers.
Day 8: Coronado Island
Just off the coast of Loreto lies Coronado Island, although it feels like an entirely different world. Its shoreline is shaped by pale rocks and small white beaches. Snorkelling brings you close to playful sea lions, curious fish and sometimes a turtle gliding by. The hike to the old volcano reveals a dry, almost lunar landscape. The contrast between minimalism on land and abundance underwater makes Coronado truly special.
Day 9: La Paz (Pichilingue)
La Paz lies along a wide bay framed by golden desert hills. The town has a relaxed, almost Mediterranean atmosphere, with a lovely waterfront promenade. Excursions lead you to Balandra, a bay of shallow turquoise water and soft, sweeping beaches. Mangroves and surrounding coves are rich in wildlife: colourful fish, birds and, in season, whale sharks.
Day 10: Los Islotes
Los Islotes consists of rocky islets home to a large colony of California sea lions. From the Zodiac you see them sunbathing, playing and vocalizing loudly. They are curious animals and often stay close during snorkelling sessions. The clear water reveals the rich underwater world around the rocks. A natural stage filled with the daily life of the colony.
Day 11: Return to Cabo San Lucas & disembarkation
As you approach Cabo San Lucas, the familiar rock formations reappear on the horizon. After days of wild nature, quiet bays and unforgettable marine encounters, arriving in this lively coastal town feels like a gentle return. The memories of Baja California linger: desert and ocean, islands and lagoons and a sea that shifts character every day.
