Profile
For the traveller who loves variety. Active in nature one day, soaking up culture in a historic town the next. You love exploring with your rental car, but consciously opt for tranquillity and boutique luxury the moment you step into your hotel in the evening.
DAY 1: Arrival in Tenerife
Your holiday begins as soon as you land at Tenerife South Airport. After picking up the keys to your rental car, you head towards your first hotel near Costa Adeje. Check in, unwind, and enjoy your first evening under the Canarian sun. You will stay here for three nights—the perfect, relaxed start to your journey.
DAY 2: Whale watching and relaxing on the south coast
Today you take to the open sea. The waters around Tenerife are home to a large resident population of pilot whales and dolphins. You will board a boat to admire these impressive marine mammals in their natural habitat. After this unique experience, the afternoon is completely yours. Go relax on the beach at Playa del Duque, soak up the atmosphere in the fishing village of La Caleta for a fresh fish lunch, or simply enjoy your hotel’s swimming pool.
DAY 3: The lunar landscape of Mount Teide and stargazing
You trade the coast for the island's impressive interior. Driving along the winding roads of the Corona Forestal, filled with the scent of pine trees, you head into Mount Teide National Park. Suddenly, the landscape changes into a striking lunar world of hardened lava, craters, and impressive rock formations like the Roques de García. If you like, you can take the cable car up for a wonderful view over the archipelago.
In the evening, it is time for something completely different. Together with a professional guide, you will look through telescopes at a starry sky and the Milky Way, which are incredibly clear here thanks to the clean air and unique location.
DAY 4: Heading north via colonial villages
After breakfast, you check out and drive towards the north, which becomes noticeably greener and more fertile. Your first stop is La Orotava, a historic town full of mansions, beautiful gardens, and traditional Canarian wooden balconies. Next, you drive to Icod de los Vinos, famous for its ancient dragon tree. In the afternoon, you arrive at your second base: San Cristóbal de La Laguna. This UNESCO town is known for its colourful facades, charming streets, and rich history. You will stay here for the next four nights.
DAY 5: The prehistoric wilderness of Anaga and Taganana
Today is all about the Anaga Rural Park, one of the oldest and most pristine parts of the island. You will drive through dense, misty laurel forests that look like something straight out of a fairy tale. A walk along the Sendero de los Sentidos (the 'Trail of the Senses') is highly recommended to take in this unique nature. Afterwards, you descend to the rugged north coast, where the steep cliffs of Taganana and the black sand beach of Playa de Benijo show just how wild and pure Tenerife can be.
DAY 6: Culture and atmosphere in La Laguna and La Orotava
Today is a relaxing day where you set your own pace. Stroll through the pedestrian streets of La Laguna, enjoy an espresso on a cosy terrace, and take the time to discover local boutiques and hidden courtyards. Looking for more? In the afternoon, drive back to the La Orotava valley to visit the places you missed on your way up, or enjoy a great glass of local wine.
DAY 7: Masca and Garachico
A beautiful scenic route is on the agenda today. You drive through the rugged Teno mountains, where you will enjoy great views of deep ravines and the ocean around every corner. The absolute highlight is Masca, a beautiful mountain village uniquely perched on a narrow ridge. After this breathtaking stop, you continue to the historic coastal town of Garachico. After a walk through the historic streets, you can take a refreshing dip in the natural lava pools of El Caletón.
DAY 8: Heading home
Sadly, your holiday has come to an end. Would you like to extend your stay by a few days? Caractère will gladly arrange that for you.
What budget should you expect?

The exact price depends on your travel dates, final hotel choices, and any extras.
Frequently Asked Questions about this Tenerife road trip
Is a rental car necessary for this Tenerife road trip?
Yes, absolutely. The most beautiful spots on Tenerife are hidden away in the mountains and natural parks, such as Anaga and Teno. Getting there by public transport is very difficult. A rental car gives you complete freedom to explore the island at your own pace and stop whenever you like.
What is the best time of year for this active trip?
Tenerife has a pleasant climate all year round. For an active trip with lots of walking, the months from October to June are ideal. It is not too hot for exploring, and the views in the mountains are often very clear. During the summer months, it is warmer, which is perfect for those who prefer pure beach weather.
What makes this Tenerife trip different from typical Canary Island holidays?
You stay in two distinct locations but discover the entire island: from Mount Teide and the Anaga laurel forest to colourful La Laguna and the mountain village of Masca. Nature, culture, and beach come together in one balanced journey, far away from the classic all-inclusive approach.
