Profile
For lovers of history and lesser-known regions. Ideal for those who want to discover Spain in a relaxed and authentic way.
Day 1: From the capital to the palace
After arriving in Madrid, you leave the hustle and bustle behind and set off for Extremadura. As the city traffic fades away, open plains and green valleys give way to Jarandilla de la Vera. Here you’ll be staying in a historic palace: as soon as you step into the courtyard, you’ll realise that your journey begins with a dive into history.
Day 2: In the footsteps of the emperor
The morning begins amidst the greenery at the Monastery of Yuste, the place where Emperor Charles V spent his final years in peace. You then drive on to Plasencia for a stroll past Renaissance façades and the iconic storks perched on the cathedral’s rooftops. You end the day in Trujillo, your base for the coming days.
Day 3: The Roman heritage of Mérida
Today is all about Mérida’s Roman past. You’ll stroll through the theatre and the amphitheatre, where the grandeur of the ancient city is still palpable. Between museum visits, seek out a shaded terrace for lunch with a view of centuries-old monuments.
Day 4: The hills of Guadalupe
You head up into the hills to Guadalupe, a village that has held a magical attraction for pilgrims for centuries. The impressive monastery forms the quiet heart of the place, whilst life in the surrounding streets unfolds at a leisurely pace. Take the time to simply wander around and linger somewhere.
Day 5: The towers of Cáceres
In Cáceres, it feels as though time has stood still for a few centuries. The city is full of palaces and towers built by families who made their fortunes in the New World. There is a serene atmosphere: every stone and every narrow alley here has its own story to tell.
Day 6: The road to Toledo
You leave Trujillo and head for Toledo. The journey takes you through a changing landscape of hills and countryside. This is a day to stop at a small bar you happen to come across along the way or to enjoy an unexpected viewpoint, before you enter the unique world of Toledo.
Day 7: Wandering through three cultures
Toledo is a city that rewards curiosity. You’ll stroll through a maze of narrow streets where churches, synagogues and mosques stand side by side. The city doesn’t call for a strict schedule, but invites you to wander from viewpoint to viewpoint and soak up its layered history.
Day 8: Back to base
You drive back to Madrid and return the hire car. The journey through the Spanish autumn is over, but the impressions of the space and tranquillity of Extremadura will return home with you as precious memories.
Frequently asked questions about this Extremadura tour
Is a hire car necessary for this Extremadura tour?
For this inland route, a hire car is the best choice. Extremadura and Castile are best explored on the back roads, where you can stop at a local terrace or a viewpoint not listed in the guidebooks. Moreover, many of our historic accommodations, such as the palace in Jarandilla de la Vera, are located in places that are difficult to reach by public transport.
When is the best time for this cultural tour of Extremadura?
Autumn, from September to November, is ideal. The extreme summer heat has subsided by then, making walks through cities such as Cáceres and Mérida much more pleasant. Moreover, the light is softer during these months, which really brings out the best in the sweeping landscapes and monumental architecture.
What makes this Extremadura tour different from other tours of Spain?
This tour focuses on the tranquillity and rich history of rural Spain. Instead of the well-known coastlines, you’ll opt for the open spaces of the high plains and towns where different cultures have left their mark. It’s a route for those who prefer to wander through medieval streets and spend the night within historic walls rather than rushing from one highlight to the next.
