Day 1: Departure for Finnish Lapland
Your journey begins in northern Finnish Lapland. From here, you’ll be taken to your hotel, which enjoys a delightful location in the heart of the forest. You’ll be provided with warm winter clothing on arrival to get your trip off to a good start.
Day 2: Visiting reindeer by snowmobile
You’ll start the day with a snowmobile tour and a guide who will give you an insight into Sámi culture and the way of life in the north. The reindeer herder welcomes you to the reindeer enclosure, where the guide tells you more about the life of a reindeer herder. You’ll have the chance to feed the reindeer – the curious animals may even come and eat out of your hand! After this amazing experience, you’ll enjoy a cosy lunch by the open fire, where you’ll be served reindeer soup and hot drinks.
Day 3: Husky safari and Aurora camp
There is no better way to admire Lapland’s winter landscape than on a husky safari. Before you set off, you’ll receive instruction on how to handle the sledge. The dogs’ enthusiasm is infectious and you’ll embark on a fantastic ride. Let the powerful huskies pull you along as you glide through the white landscape.
In the evening, you’ll go on an Aurora hunt on the stunning Lake Inari. You’ll sit comfortably in a sledge pulled by the guide’s snowmobile. This way, you can enjoy the northern sky all the way to the camp. Whilst observing the night sky, you’ll enjoy the campfire with hot drinks. The atmosphere around the campfire is an experience in itself. Lake Inari is one of the best places in the world to view the Northern Lights because there is absolutely no light pollution. If you’re lucky, you’ll enjoy this unique light phenomenon tonight.
Day 4: Snowshoeing and Aurora snowmobile
During the snowshoeing excursion, you’ll head into the forests and hills. The forest is a beautiful winter wonderland and the silence there is unparalleled. During the trip, the guide will share interesting stories and information about Finnish nature and wildlife. Eventually, you’ll reach the camp where you’ll have lunch and a hot drink by the campfire. This trip is perfect for nature lovers, as snowshoeing is a truly eco-friendly activity! In the evening, you’ll set off on a snowmobile tour in search of the Northern Lights. You’ll head to open areas where the chances of seeing the Northern Lights are highest.
Day 5: departure for home
Time to leave the beautiful wilderness behind and head back home.
Frequently asked questions about this trip to Finnish Lapland
When is the best time to see the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland?
The period between December and March is ideal due to the long, dark nights and stable snow conditions. In the region around Inari, there is hardly any light pollution, which significantly increases the chances of a clear view of the Aurora Borealis compared to locations further south.
Is the winter clothing provided on site sufficient for the extreme cold?
Yes, the professional thermal overalls, special boots and mittens you borrow on arrival are designed for temperatures well below freezing. We do, however, recommend that you wear layers of wool or thermal material directly against your skin to retain your body heat as effectively as possible.
Do I need to be an experienced driver for the snowmobile tour?
No, before the start of each safari you will receive comprehensive safety instructions and learn how to operate the machine safely along the marked forest trails. You only need a valid driving licence, and the guides always adapt the pace to the group’s abilities.
