Profile

Ideal for couples wishing to discover Sri Lanka in an immersive and exclusive way. Perfect for those who love nature, culture, and active excursions, while traveling with a focus on privacy, personal comfort, and accommodations with character.

Important information:

  • An international passport is required, valid for at least 6 months after return, with at least 2 blank pages.
  • A valid visa is required.
  • No special vaccinations are required, but are recommended. When traveling to Sri Lanka we recommend vaccination against DTP and Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B and TB. Vaccination against yellow fever is only mandatory for Sri Lanka if you have been in a country with yellow fever 7 days before entering Sri Lanka. This also applies if you have made a transfer and spent more than 12 hours in the yellow fever country in question. There is no risk of malaria. We do recommend seeking advice from your family doctor or the Tropical Institute.

Day 1: Arrival in Sri Lanka and acclimatizing on the coast

Upon arrival at the airport, your private chauffeur will be waiting to transfer you to Kalutara on the southwest coast (approx. 1.5 hours). Check in, unwind, and enjoy the lush, green surroundings.

Optional: Fully immerse yourself in the holiday mood with a guided walking meditation through the pristine landscape of the Glenross estate.

Day 2: Trekking through the Sinharaja rainforest

Today, you will venture into the Sinharaja Rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the island's last remaining stretches of virgin tropical rainforest. Accompanied by a local naturalist, you will spot rare birds and exotic butterflies. After a picnic lunch in the heart of nature, return to the hotel where a relaxing foot massage awaits you.

Day 3: Rafting on the Kelani and afternoon tea

A scenic 4.5-hour drive brings you into the cooler hill country. En route, you can opt for an adrenaline rush with a white-water rafting adventure on the Kelani River in Kitulgala. You will stay at Uga Halloowella, nestled amidst endless tea fields. In the afternoon, a refined afternoon tea will be served overlooking the rolling green hills.

Day 4: Tea picking and cycling through the plantations

Delve into the history of Ceylon tea alongside a local expert. Meet the estate's tea pluckers, learn how to select the finest leaves yourself, and visit the local factory. In the afternoon, explore the undulating tea country by mountain bike. A short tuk-tuk transfer brings you to the starting point, where you will enjoy a panoramic ride along the vast fields.

Day 5: Colonial Nuwara Eliya and an iconic train journey

First, travel to Nuwara Eliya, a charming mountain town steeped in a distinct British colonial atmosphere. Afterward, board the train at Ambewela heading to Haputale. Clinging to steep mountainsides and overlooking deep valleys, this ride is widely considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world.

Day 6: The Diyaluma waterfalls and high tea

After breakfast, hike to the top of the spectacular Diyaluma Falls (220 meters high). At the summit, you will find natural rock pools offering breathtaking views over the valley. After the descent, settle down in the gardens of the nostalgic Thotalagala Plantation Bungalow for a classic high tea in an elegant, old-world setting.

Day 7: Boat safari and wildlife spotting

Today, the landscape shifts into dry, sweeping plains. Check into a stylish glamping camp surrounded by wilderness. In the afternoon, a unique boat safari awaits on the massive Senanayake Samudra reservoir. With a bit of luck, you might spot wild elephants swimming from island to island.

Day 8: Encounter with the Veddah and traditional cooking masterclass

A truly special morning: walk through the forest with the chief of the Veddah, the indigenous people of Sri Lanka, as he shares insights into their ancient traditions. In the afternoon, pick fresh herbs from the camp's organic garden and learn from the chef how to prepare an authentic Sri Lankan curry over an open wood fire.

Day 9: The Dambulla cave temples and cultural show

Journey back into the cultural heart of the island. En route, visit the impressive cave temples of Dambulla, carved deep into the rockface and filled with centuries-old Buddha statues. End the day on a colorful note with a traditional dance and music performance in Habarana.

Day 10: Sunrise on the Lion Rock and jeep safari

An early start to ascend the iconic Sigiriya Rock. Walk past the famous frescoes to the summit just in time for a magical sunrise. Afterward, enjoy a unique floating breakfast on the serene Thalkote Lake. In the afternoon, head into the wild by jeep (Minneriya, Kaudulla, or Eco Park) in search of large herds of wild elephants.

Day 11: To the tropical southwest coast

After breakfast, travel down to the tropical southwest coast.

Optional: En route, visit the medieval royal capital of Polonnaruwa with its impressive ruins and rock-carved temples. Upon arrival in Bentota, check in and enjoy your first evening on the wide sandy beach.

Day 12 & 13: Days at leisure

Two wonderful days to spend entirely as you wish. Relax by the pool, head out to catch some waves surfing, or simply enjoy the beach. Your chauffeur remains at your disposal (up to 60 km per day) to help you discover a charming local market, a hidden temple, or a neighboring beach.

Day 14: Departure homeward

Your final hours on the coast. After check-out, your chauffeur will transfer you to Colombo airport (approx. 45 minutes) for your flight back home.

What to expect budget-wise?

The exact price depends on your travel dates, final choices, and any customized extras.

Frequently asked questions about this tour

What clothing should I pack for this trip, and what should I keep in mind when visiting temples?

Since you will cross different climates during this journey, we recommend packing layers. For the coastal region and Gal Oya, light, breathable clothing (such as cotton or linen) is ideal. In the higher hill country (Hatton and Haputale), it cools down considerably in the evenings, making a warm sweater, jacket, or cardigan essential. When visiting sacred sites, such as the Dambulla cave temples, shoulders and knees must be strictly covered for both men and women. Wearing white or light-colored clothing when visiting temples is also highly appreciated as a sign of respect. Since you must enter temples barefoot, it is a good idea to bring a pair of (thick) socks to protect your feet from the stones heated by the sun.

How physically demanding are the activities, such as the hikes and the climb up the Lion Rock?

The activities and excursions included in this itinerary are designed to be perfectly manageable for anyone with a normal level of basic fitness. The climb up Sigiriya Rock involves quite a few stairs, but by departing early in the morning, we avoid both the midday heat and the large crowds. The walks in the Sinharaja Rainforest and to the Diyaluma Falls are also done at a leisurely pace. Because you are traveling with a private chauffeur and personal local guides, the schedule and walking pace can be fully adjusted to your personal preferences and energy levels at any time during the trip.

Can I customize or extend this tour, for example with a longer beach stay?

Absolutely. This itinerary serves purely as inspiration to showcase what is possible. At Caractère, every detail is flexible. Because we work exclusively with private chauffeurs and small-scale boutique properties, we can fully tailor the trip to your wishes. Would you like to spend an extra night in the mystical tea country, add a specific safari, or end your journey with an extended luxury beach stay in Bentota? Just let us know, and we will customize the program to match your personal travel desires perfectly.
