Profile
Perfect for travellers who want to experience Lapland’s winter in a small-scale and considered way, with privacy and personal guidance throughout.
Day 1: Departure for Swedish Lapland
Your adventure begins in northern Sweden. Here, you’ll be personally welcomed at the airport by the owners of the lodge where you’ll be staying, before travelling on to the homestead, where you’ll be provided with thick winter clothing so you can brave the winter cold without a care. You will then travel on to your private lodge in the heart of nature, possibly by husky sledge. The lodge features its own sauna and hot tub – the ultimate in relaxation during the winter months.
Day 2: Husky safari
Opt for a very intimate dog sled experience where you sit on the sled and a professional musher drives you across the frozen lakes and through the snow-covered forest. You’ll get to know the huskies and enjoy the stunning scenery. Another option is to go on a self-drive tour with the huskies. You’ll meet the huskies, learn how to prepare them for the ride and receive instructions on how to steer the sledge. One person steers the sledge and the other sits on it. Of course, you can swap positions along the way. The experienced musher leads the lead dog team. Get ready for a day full of adrenaline!
Day 3: Ice fishing and the Northern Lights
Today you’ll go winter fishing on the lake, surrounded by stunning scenery. Your winter clothing will keep you warm as you drill a hole through the ice and drop a small lure to attract one of the local fish species. Three hours of fun accompanied by hot drinks and cake.
In the evening, you’ll go in search of the Northern Lights. It’s an incredible experience where you’ll try to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights during an evening snowshoe walk. You’ll be kitted out with winter clothing, snowshoes and headlamps, and you’ll have a clear view of the north. Even if the Northern Lights prove elusive, this is an excellent excursion with plenty of time for stargazing. The excursion is tailored to your own ability.
Day 4: Snowmobile excursion
A snowmobile tour is a fun way to explore nature in the winter landscape. You’ll first learn to drive these powerful machines along forest trails and frozen lakes, and then you’ll set off. You’ll have the chance to spot reindeer and other wildlife whilst your experienced guide leads the way and shares stories about life in the frozen north. Along the way, you’ll stop to enjoy a delicious lunch.
Day 5: Return home
You’ll be taken to the airport, after which you’ll return home.
Frequently asked questions about this Lapland tour
When is the best time to visit for a winter experience in Swedish Lapland?
The period from December to March is ideal, as snow conditions are optimal for activities such as husky safaris and snowmobile tours. During these months, the nights are at their darkest, which significantly increases your chances of seeing the magical Northern Lights.
How cold does it get in Lapland and what clothing do I need?
Temperatures can range from -5°C to as low as -30°C, but the dry freezing cold feels less biting than a damp winter in Belgium or the Netherlands. On arrival, you will be provided with specialised thermal clothing, including a jumpsuit, boots and gloves, so that you are fully protected against the elements.
Is this trip suitable for people with no experience of winter activities?
Absolutely, as all activities are fully tailored to your level and physical condition under the supervision of professional guides. Whether you opt for a leisurely sleigh ride or drive a snowmobile yourself, the personalised approach ensures a safe and comfortable experience.
