Vacations in Cinque Terre

6 Days - 5 Nights

Colorful villages set against steep cliffs, narrow streets full of flowers and fragrant trattorias, and views that will make you go quiet: the Cinque Terre and Portovenere are without a doubt one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. On this trip, you'll stay in characterful Portovenere, base for exploring five iconic villages as well as lesser-known gems. You will explore the region on foot, by boat and by train, discovering along the way atmospheric ports, hidden coves, artisan stores and local specialties such as trofie al pesto and Sciacchetrà wine. A trip for those who love Italian charm and tranquility.

Day 1: Arrival and exploration of Portovenere

After arriving in Portovenere, check into your hotel, Grand Hotel Portovenere, and take your first stroll through the historic center. Stroll through the colorful alleys, visit the imposing San Pietro Church, perched on a rock with spectacular views, and admire the ancient Doria Castle. End the day with dinner at a seafood restaurant on the harbor and taste local specialties such as trofie al pesto and fresh seafood.

Day 2: Explore Riomaggiore and Manarola

Today begins your exploration of the Cinque Terre. Take the boat or train to Riomaggiore, the southernmost village. Stroll through the steep streets and visit the small harbor before heading toward Manarola. This village is known for its iconic view of the colorful houses set against the cliffs. Take a short walk to the panoramic Punta Bonfiglio and enjoy a glass of local Sciacchetrà wine at Nessun Dorma, one of the best viewpoints.

Day 3: Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare

After breakfast, take the train or boat to Vernazza, perhaps the most photogenic village in the Cinque Terre. Wander the narrow alleys, climb the medieval Torre Doria for views of the pastel-colored facades and the sea, and pause at a harbor-side cafe for a cappuccino. Then travel on to Monterosso al Mare, the largest village of the five. Here you'll trade the steep cliffs for a wide sandy beach - perfect for a few hours of sun, sea and rest. In the late afternoon, you return to Portovenere.

Day 4: Hike between Corniglia and Vernazza

Today you put on your hiking boots. You will first take the train to Corniglia, the only village of the Cinque Terre that is not by the sea, but towering high on a cliff above the coastline. From here start a panoramic walk of about 4 km toward Vernazza. The path winds past vineyards and olive trees, with constant views of the shimmering sea below. Once you arrive in Vernazza, a well-deserved lunch awaits on a terrace by the harbor. If you still have energy left, continue walking to Monterosso or return to Portovenere at your own pace.

Day 5: Boat trip to the islands and La Spezia

After breakfast, hop aboard for a leisurely boat ride to the islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto, which lie just off the coast of Portovenere. These small islands are pristine and rugged, with quiet coves where you can take a refreshing dip in crystal clear waters. In the afternoon, visit La Spezia. Stroll along the lively promenade, dive into the Maritime Museum or wander the streets full of local stores. In the evening, return to Portovenere for dinner with a view of the sun slowly disappearing behind the horizon.

Day 6: Return home

Start your final morning with a leisurely breakfast and views of Portovenere's colorful harbor. Take another short walk along the shoreline or enjoy one last swim in the sea. If you like, browse through the stores for a jar of homemade pesto or handmade ceramics. Then leave, with suitcases full of local flavors and a head full of memories of the Ligurian coast.
