At the foot of Assisi, with an open view of the impressive basilica, lies the brand-new Ascesi Resort. The estate has a remarkable past: this was once the site of the Ospedale delle Pareti, where Francis stopped in September 1226 to give his final blessing to the city. The origins go back even further to 1080, with the small church of San Salvatore delle Pareti, dedicated to protecting victims of earthquakes.
Inside the apse, you can still see a 16th-century fresco depicting Saint Augustine, Saint Francis and Saint Anthony. After acquiring the property in 2017, local entrepreneur Giampiero Bianconi spent six years restoring the historic buildings with a team of skilled artisans. Today, modern techniques and centuries-old materials blend into a warm, harmonious whole.

A commemorative plaque marks this place as the final stop of Saint Francis in September 1226. Ill and almost blind, he asked to be set down at the former Ospedale delle Pareti to bless Assisi one last time.
All rooms are spacious (at least 45 m²) and overlook either the city or the valley. They feature a comfortable king-size bed, a private sauna, a multifunctional shower, tea and coffee facilities and a bathroom that feels like a small wellness retreat.

Umbrian cuisine shines in its most authentic form here, especially in the Rocciata umbra, a traditional pastry filled with apples, nuts, raisins and a hint of cinnamon. It carries the scent of autumn and feels like a warm family recipe passed down through generations. Prefer something savoury? The Pancaciati are soft rolls enriched with pecorino, Parmesan and walnuts, a small tribute to the region’s rustic cooking traditions.

In the morning, an à-la-carte breakfast awaits you, featuring homemade pastries and bread from the in-house pastry chef, freshly prepared egg dishes and freshly pressed fruit juices. When the weather is kind, breakfast is served in the garden. For lunch or dinner, a small fixed menu offers light dishes and snacks. The hotel does not have a full restaurant, but within a radius of about 5 to 10 kilometres you’ll find plenty of charming places where you can discover even more of Umbrian cuisine.
The hotel is located just 5 km from the historic centre of Assisi. The charming surrounding towns are easy to reach as well: Spello lies 14 km away, Perugia 23 km, Spoleto 46 km and the medieval town of Gubbio 50 km.
