When a handful of Greek refugees from Asia Minor settled in Halkidikí in 1922, the monks of the Áthos gave them a piece of their land. 'Ouranoúpoli' they called their new home, 'City of Heaven,' and they built there with the courage of love their white cottages with red tiled roofs and wooden balconies. Ouranoúpoli, the gateway to Mount Áthos, is still an unspoiled heavenly paradise, where green hills stroke the golden sand to swell out into the deep blue sea, and where the 14th-century Byzantine tower stately watches monks dressed in black as they set sail through the gray morning mist in their colorful boats toward the horizon, toward their heaven on Áthos.
