Habsburg palaces and historic coffee houses alternate and then there is the breathtaking Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia, one of the largest squares in Europe overlooking the sea. In the lively center and close to the shopping streets, lies the historic Hotel Continentale, a well-kept and comfortable hotel with friendly service. An absolute added value is the terrace where you can have breakfast and dinner outside in good weather. And all this in a city worth discovering.

Work out and wind down

Stroll past majestic Habsburg palaces, shop in the elegant shopping streets and feel the lovely atmosphere. Do like the "locals" and drink a "Capo in B" (= a cappuccino in a glass) in one of the many historic coffee houses. Stroll past the Roman amphitheater, the cozy neighborhood of the Grand Canal and admire 'Le Sartine' (= the seamstresses), 2 bronze girls sewing the Italian flag as a symbol of Trieste's official attribution to Italy. Visit San Giusto Hill with its imposing castle, its cathedral and its breathtaking views. And, be sure to visit the Castello di Miramare with its beautiful setting and gardens.

Worth getting out of bed for

'My soul is in Trieste,' James Joyce wrote about 'Little Vienna by the Sea,' located near Slovenia and with deep roots in the history of the Habsburg Empire. Trieste is the perfect match between Austrian order and Italian flair. On weekends, the Triestini make their 'passeggiata' along the Riviera di Barcola to the Castello di Miramare. This white castle, with its magnificent position above the cliffs of the Adriatic Sea, is also called "Il Castello dell'Amore" because it was the love nest of Archduke Maximilian of Austria and Charlotte of Belgium, daughter of Leopold I. The walk is completed in one of the many historic coffee houses, where famous writers such as Franz Kafka and James Joyce loved to come. The city has an important coffee history, and is the birthplace of the famous coffee brand Illy. At sunset, the breathtaking Piazza dell'Unita d'Italia, one of the largest squares in Europe overlooking the sea, is the ideal place for an "aperitivo".
