Lou Calen is set in the heart of Cotignac, on a green 3-hectare estate with olive trees, swimming pools and several restaurants. You stay in charming bastides spread across the grounds. In between meals, you can choose between a swim, a massage, a book from the library or a trip to the Gorges du Verdon or the Côte d’Azur. Not always an easy choice, but there are worse problems to have. Lou Calen has been part of Cotignac’s history for a very long time. Its name means “little oil lamp” in Provençal.

The rooms are spread across several bastides and have a fresh, modern look with Provençal touches. Expect natural materials, soft colours and plenty of light.
The “Cassole Terrasse” room gets our vote, mainly for its private terrace overlooking the park. Add a glass of pastis and the picture is complete.
There are two heated outdoor swimming pools, open from April to October. Swim a few lengths or simply float around for a while. Both count.
Fancy moving? Explore the area around Cotignac on foot or by bike. Not today? Book a massage, taste local wine and olive oil or join one of the creative workshops. The hotel also organises activities around food, wellbeing, sport and culture. Plenty to do, in other words. Doing absolutely nothing remains an excellent option too.

A stay at Lou Calen without an aperitif would be a bit of a missed opportunity. Breakfast is a continental buffet, served outside on the terrace when the weather is good. For dinner, there is “Jardin Secret”, awarded a Michelin Green Star. Set inside a 200-year-old bastide, the restaurant uses local produce together with vegetables and herbs grown in its own garden.

“Le Bistrot de Lou Calen” is open all year round. Fire takes centre stage here, with meat, fish and vegetables cooked over flames and hot coals. On Sundays, brunch joins the menu too. And then there is “La Tuf”, the hotel’s beer bar. Take a seat inside or outside under the olive trees and try a selection of local craft beers. La Tuf has become well known far beyond Cotignac. Probably not because everyone comes for the water.
