This charming, family-run hotel on Salina is situated in the northern village of Malfa and is the product of the meticulous renovation of an old borgo in tune with the surrounding nature and Aeolian traditions. Owner Clara, her husband Michele and their son Luca welcome you with immense hospitality. The kitchen is run by their daughter, the young and very talented Martina Caruso.
The 30 rooms are spread across the grounds, some above the main house and others in the garden, and each is named after a flower of the island. They have whitewashed walls, tiled floors, wrought-iron beds and antique furniture. Every room has air conditioning, a ceiling fan, TV, telephone, WiFi, a minibar, a safe and a bathroom with shower, hairdryer, bathrobes and slippers.
At about 20 m², the Superior rooms are small and look out over the garden. That is why we recommend the Deluxe category: about 26 m², on the first floor, with a French balcony or terrace and a full or partial sea view.
The outdoor pool (unheated) is open when the weather allows, and sun loungers are free of charge. A 150-metre walk takes you to a rocky beach where you can swim and snorkel. The pebble beach of Punta Scario is about 1 km away.
The spa (for ages 13 and over) is partly outdoors. It has Roman-style sunken outdoor pools fed by natural springs, a steam room, a Kneipp walk and a jacuzzi. Massages and treatments using island produce such as Malvasia, capers, prickly pear, lemon and bitter orange are available at extra cost. Reception arranges excursions, wine tastings, boat trips, diving, sailing and hikes, including to the two extinct volcanoes Fossa delle Felci (968 m) and Monte dei Porri (886 m). You can also order a taxi or rent an electric scooter there.
At Hotel Signum, you can choose between Michelin restaurant Signum's three top terraces, all of which are of equal value.
Breakfast is à la carte, with fresh local fruit and pastries, and is served on the terrace between 7 and 11 am. Restaurant Signum (1 Michelin star, booking recommended) is run by chef Martina Caruso, who cooks with produce from the island. It has three areas: a covered terrace with views of the sea, Panarea and Stromboli, a garden veranda used in spring and autumn, and the bar, open before and after dinner. A tasting menu costs from around 100 euros per person, excluding drinks, you pay at the hotel. The cocktail bar also serves drinks by the pool and on the terraces.
The hotel is quietly set among bougainvillea and citrus trees in Malfa, in the north of Salina, with views of the sea, Panarea and Stromboli. The centre of Malfa, with shops, restaurants and cafés, is less than 1 km away, and a rocky beach is 150 metres away. The small port of Santa Marina, where the boats dock, is 7 km away and about an hour and a half by boat from Milazzo in Sicily.
It is best to book a flight to Catania.
There is a transfer available between the port of Santa Marina, Salina and the hotel, which costs around 25 euros per journey. A transfer between Catania airport and the port of Milazzo costs around 210 euros per journey, or 260 euros for four people. A boat ticket from Milazzo to Salina costs around 25 euros per person.
