Also referred to as 'The Rock' or the 'Gibraltar of the East', Monemvassía is a true historic landmark in Greece. It is a mythical stretch of rock, ripped loose by earthquakes from the right headland of the Peloponnese, later connected to the mainland by a bridge, its only access road, 'móni émvasi'. On this black rock in the sea, a great Byzantine fortress city arose in the 6th century. It was envied and besieged throughout the centuries by Franks, Venetians, Turks and Greeks. They all left their marks there and built a cathedral in the maze of streets and alleys, stately mansions and Byzantine domed churches. It is an open-air museum in the middle of the sea, preserved from the world thanks to its 'móni émvasi'.
