In the gently rolling hills just outside Siena lies La Certosa di Maggiano, a former Carthusian monastery that has watched over the olive groves since 1314. The cloisters, inner courtyards and centuries-old stones still whisper stories of silence and devotion, while hints of herbs and citrus drift across the estate. After losing its religious function in the 18th century, the property became a meeting point for village life, art and warm hospitality. Today, La Certosa feels like an elegant retreat with a true sense of soul: a boutique hotel where you unwind among the Tuscan landscapes, surrounded by character-filled rooms and an atmosphere that never feels staged.
Fresh fruit and a small bottle of olive oil await you on arrival, a simple yet wonderfully flavourful introduction to the estate.
The hotel is open year-round.

In 1969, Anna Ricordati took over the abandoned monastery and restored it together with architect Renzo Mongiardino. What had slowly faded into silence became a lively meeting place for artists, thinkers and family. Over the years, it welcomed several well-known visitors, including actress Monica Vitti, film director Franco Zeffirelli and former president Sandro Pertini.
Each room has its own character, with vintage touches, crafted details and colours that blend beautifully with the historic setting. King-size beds ensure a restful night and views look out onto the cloisters, courtyard or garden. All bathrooms feature a shower, except for one room that has a bathtub.
The Prestige rooms stand out thanks to their more spacious layout and refined finish. They feel a touch more exclusive and therefore extra special.
In the garden you'll find a heated outdoor pool (approx. 25°C), open from around April to November. Sun loungers are available free of charge.

The area is perfect for excursions: the Val d’Orcia lies a short distance away, with charming towns like Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano.
Children are welcome, although no specific facilities are provided for them.
A seat beneath the magnolia at aperitif hour creates an especially charming atmosphere.
Casual chic
In the morning, a generous and carefully prepared breakfast buffet awaits you in the old monastery kitchen, a place where the warmth of the past still seems to linger in the walls. If you’d like something extra, you can order a warm à-la-carte dish. As soon as the sun appears, you naturally drift outside to sit under the pergola surrounded by greenery.
During the day, everything feels pleasantly simple: a light lunch in the restaurant or a savoury bite by the pool. In the evening, chef Giovanni Cini takes the lead with Tuscan dishes often inspired by his mother’s recipes. On warm summer evenings, the courtyard with its graceful arcades becomes a wonderfully atmospheric setting for dinner.
Anyone eager to step into the shoes of a Tuscan cook can join a cooking class on request. At the Magnolia Cocktail Bar, you round off your day with an aperitif, a fragrant coffee or a digestif.
