The 13th-century castle of Otočec has had an eventful history. Noblemen, church leaders and the Knights of Otočec took up residence there, knight Janez Sonce bought the building in 1629. After the castle was burned down by partisans in 1942, it was completely restored, later opening its doors as Slovenia's top hotel.

Near the hotel is also the Castle Garden, where vegetables, herbs, aromatic plants and berries are grown organically.
