50 kilometers northeast of Milan is Bergamo, one of Lombardy's oldest towns, with a beautiful medieval city center. A cable car takes you from Bergamo Bassa, the fashionable lower town, to Bergamo Alta. This walled medieval upper town has beautiful squares such as the cute Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe and Piazza Vecchia, the city's most famous square, with a 53-meter-high city tower. Here you can stroll on the ancient city walls, get lost in narrow streets and eat good food in cozy restaurants. A little higher up, near the San Vigilio Castle, is the very small-scale Relais San Vigilio.
