Day 1: Arrival and Reykjanes Peninsula
Upon arrival in Keflavik, you will immediately pick up your rental car and begin your exploration of this breathtaking country. If you arrive early enough, explore the Reykjanes Peninsula. Here you will dive into Iceland's unique geology and volcanic landscapes. Reykjanes is also home to the world-famous Blue Lagoon, where you'll soak in the soothing azure waters.
Day 2: Thingvellir National Park - Geysir - Gullfoss
Today you will explore the famous Golden Circle region. Start your adventure with a drive to Lake Thingvallavatn, Iceland's largest lake, located in Thingvellir National Park. The next highlight on your trip is Gullfoss, the "Golden Waterfall", where several hiking trails will offer you stunning views of this impressive natural phenomenon. In addition, you will visit the nearby Geysir hot springs area, where you will witness the famous Geysir and Strokkur, as well as countless other hot springs and bubbling mud pools. Afterwards, take a look at local Icelandic life. Visit Laugarvatn Fontana Geothermal Steam Baths and enjoy the natural and healing steam rooms as well as a variety of relaxing mineral baths. Fontana has been a local favourite since the early 20th century and you will find out why.
Day 3: Thjorsardalur Valley - Skogar - Vik
Your day starts with exploring the Thjorsardalur Valley where you can marvel at the constantly changing landscapes, ranging from birch forests and sandy lava fields to meandering rivers and majestic waterfalls. Afterwards, you will continue to the Gjain Valley with its miniature waterfalls and intriguing volcanic formations. On a clear day, you can see the impressive Hekla volcano towering high above the region. Then, you will continue along a scenic route on Iceland's southern coast. You will make a few stops to admire the unique beauty of the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls, each with its own unmistakable charm. Continue your journey to Dyrholaey* and witness the wild waves on the black sand beaches of Reynisfjara. Your last stop is Vik, Iceland's southernmost city.
*Keep in mind that Dyrholaey is closed between mid-May and 25 June due to bird nesting season.
Day 4: Vatnajokull National Park - Jokulsarlon Glacial Lagoon - Hofn
On day 4, you will venture into a world of glaciers! You'll visit the southern part of Vatnajokull National Park, named after Europe's largest glacier. Enjoy the views of rich green landscapes and black sand, dominated by some magnificent glaciers. You'll also discover Svinafellsjokull, one of the most beautiful glacier terminuses slowly creeping down from Vatnajokull. Afterwards, you'll visit Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon where you'll have breathtaking views of icebergs floating in a glacial lagoon. You'll have the opportunity to take a boat trip between the icebergs. Nearby you'll find Diamond Beach, a black beach dotted with glistening ice blocks. You'll end your day in the fishing port of Hofn where you can sample the local speciality, langoustines.
Day 5: Hofn - East Fjords - Egilsstadir
Your day kicks off by driving over the Almannaskard pass where you can admire the majestic coastline. Continue your journey to the towering mountains plunging vertically into the sea to form the magnificent East Fjords. During your road trip, you'll cross picturesque villages, each with its own special history and charm. Finally, you'll drive to the town of Egilsstadir, located near Iceland's largest forest and a lake rumoured to be home to a legendary friendly monster. This area is known for its excellent local cuisine, which you'll be sure to taste over dinner.
Day 6: Lake Myvatn
Your first stop of the day is the desert plateau of Modrudalsoraefi, a remote and pristine area. You'll continue to Lake Myvatn, a volcanic lake surrounded by geothermal activity including bubbling mud pools and steam. Next up is a visit to the impressive Studlagil, a gorge made of basalt columns resembling organ pipes. From the viewing platform at the gorge, you can easily and safely enjoy the view. Along the way, you'll also stop at Dettifoss, Europe's largest and most powerful waterfall, and continue to the Namaskard pass with its boiling pools and vibrant colours. You'll head on to Skutustadir where you'll hike past pseudocraters and finally explore the peculiar lava formations at Dimmuborgir.
Day 7: Myvatn - Godafoss - Akureyri
Begin your day by visiting sights around Myvatn. Next, you'll head to the beautiful Godafoss waterfall, one of the most important symbols of northern Iceland. Afterwards, head to Akureyri, the colourful northern "capital" of Iceland. The town has charming buildings and offers stunning views of the Eyjafjordur fjord. Although Akureyri is small, it is very lively and worth visiting.
Day 8: Skagafjordur - Borgarnes
Passing picturesque valleys surrounded by dramatic mountains, you'll drive towards the Skagafjordur region. Icelanders consider the area around Skagafjordur one of the best places for horse breeding. Experience it yourself on a guided horseback ride. Afterwards, you'll cross the Holtavorduheidi plateau and drive into western Iceland. You'll drive through Borgarfjordur, a region that has gained international recognition for its beautiful volcanic and forested landscape and for its Viking history. Hike to the top of Grabrok crater for stunning views and listen to the powerful flowing waters of Deildartunguhver, Europe's most powerful hot spring area. Make sure to stop and admire the stunning Hraunfossar waterfalls, where clear blue water flows through black lava formations. Nearby is Barnafoss, a waterfall with even more brilliant blue colours.
Day 9: Borgarfjordur - Snaefellsjokull National Park - Reykjavik
Today you'll explore the various natural landscapes in Snaefellsjokull National Park. The showpiece of the park is the Snaefellsjokull glacier itself, covering a dormant volcano that last erupted in 250 AD. You'll also see Kirkjufell, one of Iceland's most photographed mountains. Finally, take a walk on the unique pebble beach of Djupalonssandur and discover beautiful stacked basalt rocks in the picturesque harbour village of Arnarstapi. In the afternoon, you'll head to Reykjavik, Iceland's amazing capital.
Day 10: Going home
Your ten-day round trip in Iceland is over. If you haven't had a chance to visit the Blue Lagoon yet and still have time before your return flight, you can take advantage of the occasion. Bear in mind an extra 2.5 hours so that you have enough time at the lagoon. You'll drive back to Keflavik International Airport and return home with lots of memories.
