Profile
For travellers who like to look beyond the classics. Ideal for combining nature, culture and gastronomy.
Day 1: Departure for Zakynthos
The journey begins at Zakynthos Airport, where you’ll collect your hire car and set off to explore this stunning island. You’ll be staying on the island for three nights at one of our Caractère hotels.
Day 2: The unspoilt west
When you say Zakynthos, you naturally think of the sea; after all, the island is renowned for its breathtaking coastline and unspoilt natural beauty. Get in your car and drive south-west, where you’ll discover some hidden beaches, tranquil bays and underwater caves. Take Plakaki, for example, where crystal-clear waters and endless views await you. Don’t forget your snorkel, as the inviting, calm waters are a great place to explore the underwater world. From the viewpoint at the top, you can enjoy a stunning view of the horizon. But be warned: it’s quite a steep climb back up, so make sure you’re in top shape!
Day 3: Marathonisi
Your trip to Zakynthos isn’t complete without a visit to the famous Marathonisi, better known as ‘Turtle Island’. This tiny, unspoilt islet off the coast of Zakynthos is a paradise of nature. What’s more, it’s a protected marine nature reserve, famous for the loggerhead sea turtle that lays its eggs there. The only way to get to Marathonisi is by water, but don’t worry: there are plenty of options. Join an organised excursion, book a private boat, or give your arm muscles a workout and kayak to the island. Back on shore and still got some time to spare? Then pay a visit to Cameo Island with its famous wooden bridge jutting out into the sea. The ideal spot for Instagram-worthy holiday snaps!
Day 4: Zakynthos Town and the Peloponnese
Today you’ll head for the mainland to continue your journey. Before catching the ferry, however, you’ll still have time to explore the charming capital of Zakynthos, which shares the island’s name. In Zakynthos, or Zante as it is known in Italian, there is something for everyone: trendy coffee bars, countless restaurants and local shops. Take a stroll through the narrow streets around the beautiful Solomon Square before heading to the harbour to bid farewell to this unforgettable island. Once you arrive in the Peloponnese, continue your Greek epic to one of our Caractère hotels where you will stay for four nights.
Day 5: Olympia
After enjoying a delicious breakfast, head inland towards Olympia to visit one of the world’s most famous archaeological sites. The atmosphere at the site where the very first Olympic Games were held is, unsurprisingly, mythical. Enjoy the peace and serenity that this almost magical place exudes and admire some well-preserved monuments from antiquity. Take a moment to rest in the charming little botanical garden and be sure to visit the stadium where legendary competitions once took place. Is your cultural appetite still not satisfied? Then continue your visit at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia.
Hungry, but in a different way? Then enjoy an excellent Greek salad on the cosy terrace of the Greek taverna right next to the exit.
Day 6: Patras
Today it’s time for a city tour. Have you heard of Patras, Greece’s third-largest city? Chances are you haven’t, because unlike big names like Athens and Thessaloniki, this bustling port city has remained relatively unknown to tourists. Unfairly so, as there’s plenty to see and do. Be sure to visit the city’s castle and the Church of Agios Andreas: the largest church in the entire Balkans and a fine example of Byzantine architecture. Make time for the Archaeological Museum too, where you’ll discover yet another impressive collection from classical antiquity. Not ready to head back to your hotel just yet? Then lose yourself in the labyrinth of shopping streets and squares, or dive into the night, because just like in all other major Greek cities, Patras also boasts a vibrant nightlife.
Day 7: Wineries and/or olive oil tasting
The Peloponnese has more to offer than just history. It is also one of Greece’s most famous and renowned wine regions. So be sure to plan a visit to one of the many wineries and estates in the region. Not much of a wine lover, but more of a fan of olive oil? You’ll also find ‘liquid gold’, as Homer described it, in abundance here. It’s no coincidence that Greece is one of the world’s largest olive oil producers. Take part in a workshop and discover more about how they make the oil and how they cultivate the olive trees. And of course, afterwards you’ll have plenty of time to sample the produce with a snack and a drink.
Day 8: Return home
Enjoy one last lavish breakfast with a view of the Ionian Sea. After that, it’s sadly time to head back to the airport. This wonderful trip has come to an end, but you’ll undoubtedly return to Greece!
