Active 8-day experiential journey to Finnish Lapland

8 Days - 7 Nights

Route

You stay in Finnish Lapland on the shores of the frozen Lake Silmäsjärvi, just outside the winter village of Levi. From your small-scale lodge, you venture into the dense pine forests, explore the Kumputunturi mountain, and seek out the action around the Levi ski resort.

Rhythm

You spend the entire week at the same idyllic location, heading out daily for active or cultural excursions. There is a wonderful balance between organized adventures during the day and free afternoons or evenings to unwind in the wellness area.

Highlights

An unforgettable husky safari through the snow-covered forests and a breathtaking snowmobile ride over the Kumputunturi mountain peak. You get to know the Sámi culture at the Samiland museum and meet reindeer at an authentic farm. Snowshoeing and ice fishing on the lake alternate with pure adrenaline during exclusive ice racing in Levi and hunting for the magical Northern Lights.

Accommodation

You sleep at the Lapland Lodge, a small-scale resort surrounded by nature. Here, you can enjoy the traditional sauna daily, a warm jacuzzi under the starlight, and cozy dinners featuring local dishes.

Profile

This journey is ideal for couples or families with teenagers looking for an authentic and active winter adventure in Lapland, with a perfect balance between adrenaline in the snow and peace in nature.

Day 1: Welcome to the serene wilderness & first winter impressions

You land in Kittilä and travel straight to your cozy home away from home: the Lapland Lodge. After a warm welcome by your host and a delicious first lunch, you put on your warm winter gear. We start gently with a relaxed walk through the nearby forest and along the lakeshore to acclimate comfortably. During 'The Story of Lapland', the host shares the first tales about the shifting seasons and the reindeer that follow nature's rhythm. Afterwards, warm up beautifully in the sauna and jacuzzi before sitting down for a cozy dinner at the lodge. The tone for an unforgettable week is set.

Day 2: Through the woods with enthusiastic huskies & a taste of Sámi culture

Today is all about the North’s most loyal four-legged friends. You visit a local kennel, where a passionate family lives for and with their sled dogs. After an enthusiastic introduction, you take your seat on the sled (with the opportunity to switch drivers along the way!) for an unforgettable safari through the dense, white forests. Following this adventure, we head towards the cozy town of Levi for a delightful lunch, followed by a visit to the Samiland museum, where you dive deep into the fascinating and rich culture of the Sámi. After this impressive day, the jacuzzi back at the lodge is already warmed up and waiting.

Day 3: Snowmobile adventure over the mountain peaks of Kumputunturi

Today, you hop onto a snowmobile for a spectacular journey from Levi, over the impressive Kumputunturi mountain, all the way back to the lodge. You speed through the snow and experience the vastness of Finnish Lapland at its very best. After an active day in the fresh outdoor air, dinner at the lodge tastes even better.

Day 4: Face to face with reindeer & a traditional lunch over an open fire

Today, you meet the icons of Lapland: the reindeer. During a visit to an authentic reindeer farm, you learn all about the lives of these special animals and help with feeding them. Next, you settle into a wooden sled for a short, idyllic ride through the forest towards the lake. Around a crackling open fire, you enjoy a traditional lunch full of local flavors while listening to stories about traditional Sámi craftsmanship. In the course of the afternoon, you return to the lodge in total peace.

Day 5: Snowshoeing, ice drilling, and magical stories on Lake Silmäsjärvi

We strap on our snowshoes for a private tour across the thick ice. The guide teaches you the technique of ice drilling, and you get the chance to try ice fishing with a traditional net. Lunch and hot drinks are served cozily outdoors around the fire. As twilight falls, you take a seat on benches made of ice and snow around the open fire and listen to ancient stories about winter traditions and life across the seasons.

Day 6: A breather in the snow & hunting for the magical Northern Lights

Today is entirely up to you. Feel like curling up by the fireplace with a good book, going for another walk, or spending the whole afternoon in the sauna and jacuzzi? Anything goes. If the Northern Lights haven't made an appearance over the past few days, we keep this evening and night flexible to go hunting for them together!

Day 7: Adrenaline on the ice racing circuit in Levi & a refreshing ice dip

We close the week with a healthy dose of excitement and competition. Today, we rent an ice racing circuit near Levi exclusively for your group. After the safety briefing and fitting your professional gear, you explore the track. An experienced instructor gives you the best tips on braking points and the ideal racing lines on the ice. Then it’s time for the real deal: practice laps, qualifying, and a thrilling final race, naturally concluded with an official prize ceremony! After lunch in Levi, you can make the day even more special: optionally choose an evening session in the sauna at Lake Silmäsjärvi, including an ice dip for the truly daring.

Day 8: A warm farewell to the High North

Depending on your flight schedule, you can still enjoy a peaceful morning at the lodge. The transfer takes you comfortably and well in time back to Kittilä airport for your flight home.

Frequently asked questions about this experiential journey

Do I need a special driver's license for the ice racing or the snowmobile tour?

No, a regular, valid driver's license (B) is sufficient to drive both the snowmobile and on the ice racing circuit. Prior to the activities, you will always receive a comprehensive safety briefing and instructions from an experienced professional, so you can hit the ice and snow with total confidence.

Do I need to purchase special polar clothing for this trip?

Fortunately not. Upon arrival at the Lapland Lodge, professional thermal gear will be waiting for you (including a warm overall, sturdy winter boots, gloves, and a hat) which you can use all week. You only need to provide your own good thermal underwear and warm mid-layers like a fleece jacket.

Is the program suitable for (young) children?

Due to its active nature, the longer tours, and the speeds during the ice racing, this specific experiential journey is ideal for adults and families with teenagers. After all, a driver's license is mandatory to operate the snowmobiles and the ice racing cars. For families with younger children, we would be happy to guide you toward one of our other, more peaceful programs in Lapland.
