The name 'Chianti' first appeared in the late 14th century, but the composition of the wine as we know it today, based on the Sangiovese grape, enriched with Canaiolo and Trebbiano, was not established until the 19th century by the Baron Ricasoli. Originally, the Chianti wine region was confined to the region between Florence and Siena, but in the 18th century the Grand Duke of Tuscany decided to expand the territory. Nowadays, there are seven different Chianti designations of origin depending on the area of production. 'Chianti Classico' refers to the original region, between Florence and Siena.
