South of Siena stretches one of the most beautiful pieces of Tuscany. Here lies the wine town of Montalcino, famous for its Brunello wine, papal Pienza, picturesque San Quirico d'Orcia, and the 12th century Abbey of Sant'Antimo, a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Inhabited for centuries by Benedictine monks, the abbey was, according to legend, founded by Emperor Charlemagne. Just 3 km away is Relais Mastrojanni. The story of this small-scale relais began in 1975 when the Mastrojanni family decided to renovate two old farmhouses, Podere Loreto and Podere San Pio. Originally they were lookouts that witnessed the passage of Etruscans and Romans. In the Middle Ages, they were used as strongholds defending the Via Francigena, the pilgrim road to Rome. Later the place was transformed into a country house with a wine cellar. A new restoration project that started in 2011 blew a new wind through the Relais, which reopened its doors in 2019. Today the owner of the estate is Francesco Illy, known for coffee.
