Relais Mastrojanni is on a wine estate in the Val d’Orcia, south of Siena, 11 km from Montalcino and 3 km from the Abbey of Sant’Antimo. The hotel occupies two old farmhouses that the Mastrojanni family began restoring in 1975, and has 11 rooms and suites designed together with artist Vittorio Corsini. Since 2022, the estate has been owned by Francesco Illy, known for coffee. In 2026, a villa was added, with four bedrooms and its own pool.
Guests will find a bottle of Mastrojanni wine in their room, along with a welcome snack prepared by the chef. Caractère travellers start their evening with a welcome drink before dinner.
The hotel is closed for a month between early January and early February.

The estate covers around 100 hectares, with olive groves and more than 40 hectares of vineyards, where the family makes Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. The winery is close to the hotel. Tours with tastings take place every day at 10.30 am, 2.30 pm and 4.30 pm, in Italian or English, from 40 euros per person.
The 11 rooms and suites were designed together with artist Vittorio Corsini, and each has its own name and colour. The old wooden beams have been preserved, and the rooms have parquet floors and views of the hills and vineyards. Bathrooms have a walk-in shower, and the minibar with soft drinks is free.
Since 2026, you can also rent Villa Poderino: 255 m², four bedrooms with private bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen and a private 12 x 5-metre pool. Breakfast is delivered to the villa every morning, and a tour with tasting at the winery is included. On request, a private chef can come and cook for you.
The Premier Garden is our favourite: at 30 m² it is spacious, and it has a terrace with a small garden. For families, the two Junior Suites San Pio 1 and 2 can be booked together as a Family Suite, they are interconnecting. A stay in one of the Suites includes a private tour and tasting at the winery.
The infinity pool looks out over Monte Amiata, from March to October you can watch the sunset from here. The pool is open from 8 am to 8 pm, and the pool bar from 12 noon to 7 pm.
The small wellness area has a sensory shower, a sauna, a Turkish bath and a small hydromassage pool overlooking the Brunello vineyards, and is open from 10 am to 7 pm. A 50-minute massage costs 110 euros and must be booked at least two weeks in advance. The gym overlooks the vineyards and is open from 8 am to 8 pm. Yoga classes are also available, in a group (35 euros per person) or private (80 euros). With the hotel’s electric bikes, you can ride to Bagno Vignoni, Sant’Angelo in Colle or Montalcino. On request, you can also go on a guided walk or bike tour, take a cooking class, join an olive oil tasting or, in autumn and winter, go truffle hunting with a guide and a Lagotto dog.
Children are welcome here, but no special facilities are provided.
In good weather, choose a table on the terrace, overlooking the vineyards and the pool.

There is a breakfast buffet in the morning and a light lunch at midday. In the restaurant, chef Tommaso Brandini, a well-travelled Florentine, cooks Tuscan dishes with regional produce. The hotel’s organic kitchen garden supplies more than 70 varieties of fruit and vegetables and more than 30 herbs. The menu changes every month. There are also menus paired with Mastrojanni wines, such as a three-course lunch with three glasses of wine (100 euros) and, in season, a truffle menu. Alongside the estate’s own wines, the wine list features many other Tuscan wines.
Relais Mastrojanni sits quietly on a hill near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, a medieval village overlooking the Abbey of Sant’Antimo. You reach it via a steep gravel road, with views over vineyards, olive trees and cypresses. Montalcino is 11 km away, Bagno Vignoni with its hot springs 22 km, Pienza 34 km, Montepulciano 47 km and Siena 54 km.
