The name Saint Nicolas Bay, Agios Nikolaos in Greek, refers to the patron saint of sailors. The well-known fishing town of the same name, called 'Aïos' for short by the Cretans, is also named after him. 150 years ago, the town had only 150 inhabitants, but today it is one of the richest and liveliest places in Crete.
