Valletta, Europe's smallest capital with the highest number of sights per square kilometre. A pocket-sized capital, however, it compensates for what it lacks in surface area with its array of culture and vibrant city life. By the way, did you know that the entire city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site?
Day 1: Valletta here we come!
You fly directly to Malta. All flights leave in the evening so you'll arrive in Malta quite late. A taxi will be waiting for you and take you to your hotel in the city where the key to your room will already be waiting for you.
Day 2: Century-old houses and charming streets
Waking up in the middle of the impressive city of Valletta, it doesn't get any better than this. On a guided walk with a private guide, you will discover the most beautiful spots and learn all about this beautiful city. The city is a gem but don't forget to look up from time to time as most of the buildings here have beautiful facades with unique ornaments. In the afternoon, pay a visit to the Upper Barraka Gardens. Take some time to unwind in these 16th-century gardens but don't forget to enjoy spectacular views of the Grand Harbour and The three cities. Just below the Upper Barraka Gardens, you will discover the saluting Battery, the cannons that fire ceremonial cannon shots every day at noon and at 4 pm. Impressive to see! In the early evening, embark on a schooner, a kind of sailing ship, because you must have seen Valletta from the water too.
Day 3: The three cities and the extravagant Saint John's co-Cathedral
After a refreshing night's sleep and full breakfast, you will spend the morning in the three cities. You will cross the Grand Harbour by water taxi to the three cities. That is a self-driving electric car, complete with pre-programmed GPS that not only takes you on the perfect tour, but also explains what you are looking at. From the famous Malta Film Studios to imposing forts and small charming streets, at every turn of the wheel your talking car tells you all about the sights. A visit to Malta isn't complete if you haven't seen Saint John's Co-Cathedral inside. Valletta's jewel is an absolute must-see. Considered one of the most beautiful in the world, the cathedral is a fine example of baroque. The world-famous masterpiece 'the beheading of John the Baptist' by Caravaggio can be seen with your own eyes. Want to know more about the Knights and the Baroque? Then be sure to visit the Palace of the Grand Masters as well.
Day 4: Visiting the noble de Piro family and coffee at Caffe Cordina
If you would like to see something different from knights and grandmasters, then a visit to the 16th-century palace Casa Rocca Piccola is a nice way to end your city trip. The palace belongs to the noble de Piro family and many of its 50-plus rooms are on display to the public. These rooms contain some of the finest and oldest furniture, silverware and paintings preserved over the past 400 years. The noble house was lucky to survive the heavy bombing in WWII. You can still see the network of underground tunnels and corridors dating all the way back to World War II. And with any luck, you'll get the guided tour from the marquis himself. Before heading home, you should definitely stop at Caffe Cordina for a cup of coffee and a pastry. The legendary coffee shop has been around since 1837 and the interior is decorated in a beautiful historical style.
